After a string of losses, Bangalore Royal Challengers defeated Chennai Super Kings by 14 runs at the MA Chidambaram stadium on May 21, 2008, to register their third victory in the IPL. Batting first, the top order of the Bangalore team failed once again to give their team a solid start. None of the batsmen barring Dravid (47 runs, 5X4) were able to score big as the Chennai bowlers restricted the visitors to a modest total of 126 runs in 20 overs. Morkel was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts picking up 4 wickets whereas Gony claimed 2 victims. Murlitharan and Balaji chipped in with 1 wicket each.

The Chennai team started their reply in a positive manner with Stephen Fleming (45 runs, 3X4, 2X6) and Parthiv Patel (24 runs, 4X4) putting on 60 runs for the first wicket. Thanks to some brilliant bowling by Anil Kumble and Jacques Kallis, Bangalore suffocated Chennai after the openers were dismissed. In a five over period between 10 and 14, the hosts could score only 27 runs for the loss of four wickets and ultimately ended 14 runs short. The loss of wickets at the regular intervals also retarded the progress of the hosts who succumbed to their fifth loss in the tournament. Anil Kumble was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors picking up 3 wickets whereas Dale Steyn claimed 2 victims. Praveen Kumar and Vinay Kumar chipped in with 1 wicket each.
