The capital city of Karnataka, Bangalore can now boast of an International airport which was opened on Friday, May 23, 2008. The airport started its operations from Friday night onwards, when Air India flight IC 609 from Mumbai touched down the new airport at 10.40 pm. Following the landing, passengers of Air India flight IC 957 left for Singapore at 12.05 am from the Bangalore International Airport.
The opening of the state-of-the-art 630 million dollar facility has been delayed several times. The airport was first expected to be inaugurated on March 30, 2008. The Bengaluru International airport is a 4,050 acre airport that is situated in Devanahalii, which is 40 km from the main city.
The new airport is believed to be able to accommodate 12 million passengers every year till 2012. A spokesman for the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) remarked that the airport is now fully functional, offering world-class facilities for domestic as well as international passengers. The Bangalore International Airport was made in a record 36 months under public-private partnership.
