Speaking on the occasion of World Tobacco Day, in Chennai, Union Health Minister Ambumani Ramadoss has promised that a law imposing ban on smoking in public places will be brought into action from October 2nd this year. He said that an act relating to ban on smoking in public places has already been brought with certain changes in it. He disclosed that Central Government two and half years ago had brought similar law but could not bring into operation, now government with some modification in it will bring it into action later this year. Ambumani Ramadoss has been campaigning against smoking in public places and this is another step in his crusade against smoking in public places.
 
Talking about the revised rules on the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act-2003, he said that as per the revised rules, smoking is banned in shopping malls, cinema halls, public/private work place, hotels, banquet halls, discotheques, canteens, coffee houses, pubs, bars, airport lounges and railway stations, etc. The revised rules came into operation after notification issued by the ministry on May 30, 2008.
