United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon will visit Myanmar this week and stopover at the areas hardest hit by the cyclone Nargis. Michele Montas, a UN spokeswoman revealed that the Myanmar’s military government has granted permission to for the UN chief to travel to the Irrawaddy delta. According to UN officials this is the worst affected region in the military junta ruled state, where thousands of cyclone survivors are not getting adequate aid.
The UN spokeswoman said that Ban Ki-moon is expected to arrive in the Southeast Asian country on Wednesday, May 21, 2008. She further revealed that the objective of the trip is to accelerate the flow of disaster relief. The UN chief is expected to meet senior members of the reclusive military government of Myanmar. Michel Montas remarked that Ban seriously hopes that his three day visit to Myanmar will ‘really make things go faster’ in the cyclone hit region. According to official reports nearly 100,000 people have died in Myanmar due to cyclone Nargis.
