According to a new study, people handling power at workplace are more prone to psychological and physical problems.

The study, which was conducted by University of Toronto, collected data from about 1,800 American working people from across various occupations and sectors by means of a survey. This study conducted disclosed the data which showed the positive and negative impacts of power at workplace.

People with job authority are defined as those who direct or manage the work of others, have control over others, pay, and can hire or fire others.

According to Scott Schieman, a sociology professor and Sarah Reid, a student, who conducted the study, power comes with both positive and negative effects on a person. "In most cases, the health costs negate the benefits."

"Power at work does have drawbacks, and the negative impact on personal health - both emotional and physical - is one of them," says Schieman, who spearheaded the study. He also mentioned that such people are reported to face more interpersonal conflicts with his or her colleagues.

These findings appeared online in Social Science and Medicine.
