Australia which is negotiating for a temporary seat in the United Nations Security Council, has said it will back India for the post for a permanent member. Australia said that it is pertinent for the UNSC to be expanded in order to reflect the modern world. The United States, Britain, France, Russia and China presently are the permanent UNSC members and have been so since its formation post World War II.
Speaking candidly, the Australian foreign minister Stephen Smith said that the UNSC permanent membership should be altered to mirror the modern reality. He said that it should have on its permanent membership, for example, Japan and India. Australia is itself seeking a temporary seat in the powerful body because it wants it to work on issues such as climate change, millennium development goals and international trade.
Foreign minister, Stephen Smith said Australia is ready to back India and Japan to become permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. He pointed out that Australia itself, being a developed and prosperous country, needs to be making a more substantial contribution at the global level. The Australian foreign minister further stated that his country considers it worthwhile to invest tens of millions of dollars for getting the UNSC seat.
