A new study which was conducted at the New York Medical Centre has revealed that doing vigorous exercises very frequently can lead to the development of fibrillation in the atrium. Atrial fibrillation is a cardiac disorder where the upper chambers of the heart beat in an abnormal fashion, which in turn can lead to fainting, failure of the heart as well as stroke.

The research team from New York University Medical Centre examined the data pertaining to about 16,921 men who had participated in the Physician’s Health Study. When the follow up of these men were done, the data showed that 1661 men had developed atrial fibrillation.

According to the leader of the research team, Dr. Anthony Aizer, even though numerous benefits can be availed from doing vigorous exercises, the study has revealed that the elite athletic men who were engaged in the endurance exercises are subjected to a higher risk for the development of atrial fibrillation.

The risk of a person developing atrial fibrillation increases by 20% if they are perofming vigorous exercises for five to seven days in a week. This risk is seen to prevail more in men who are below fifty years of age.

The details of the study will be published in the American Journal of Cardiology.
