Indian students bagged five gold medals at the recently held 39th International Physics Olympiad (IPO).

Indian participants fared remarkably in the 39th International Physics Olympiad (IPO), which just ended on Monday, July 28. Held at Hanoi in Vietnam, the students participating from India bagged four gold medals and a silver. This is best performance by Indians in the Physics Olympiad held so far.

 

In the medal tally, India occupied the third rank after China and Taiwan. Dr Vijay Singh, co-ordinator of the Olympiad that the teams from both China and Taiwan clinched five gold medals each and stand in a tie with Korea and the United States. ‘We are ahead of Russia, Iran, UK, Germany and several other countries,’ Dr Singh added.

 

The 39th International Physics Olympiad (IPO) of this year witnessed participation of 376 students hailing from 82 nations. The Indian gold medal winners include Nishant Totla from Aurangabad, Shitikanth from Patna, Garvit Juniwal from Jaipur and Kunal Shah from Mumbai. Saurabh Goyal from Kota bagged a silver medal.

 

It was at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, the nodal centre for science olympiad programme in India, where the five of them were guided. They are also the toppers of this year’s IIT joint entrance exam.
