The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a senior Congress leader and education minister of Assam, Ripun Bora for allegedly offering bribe to an officer of the agency for getting his name cleared from a murder investigation in which he is one of the suspects. This incident is sure to cause the Tarun Gogoi government slammed politically.

As such, the Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi following the arrest of Mr Bora swiftly sacked him from the cabinet as a damage control measure. It is alleged that Mr Bora was caught proffering a bribe of Rs 10 lakh to a CBI officer investigating the murder case of a student leader Daniel Toppo in 2000. “He had approached the complainant (CBI officer) through the middleman for negotiating outcome of the CBI investigation,” informed the CBI.

The arrested senior Congress minister Mr Bora had already been cross-examined by the CBI before many times for the murder probe and he allegedly wanted the CBI officer to hush it up. But the said CBI official instantly intimated his seniors about the matter and consequently lodged a complaint on Monday 3 June. A trap was laid for the minister who arrived in Delhi with a businessman, R Maheswari. Both got arrested by the CBI from Mathura road.
