Ashok Mankad, a former cricket player of India, died in his sleep on Friday, August 1, 2008, announced the Indian cricket board. He was 61 years old. A right-handed batsman, Ashok Mankad played in 22 tests between 1969 and 1978.

 

He was the eldest son of the Vinoo Mankad, who represented India in 44 Test matches. Vinoo Mankad is remembered as amongst India's great all-rounders. Ashok Mankad married the former Asian Tennis champion, Nirupama Mankad.

 

Harsh Mankad, their son, happens to be a member of the Indian Davis Cup since the year 2000. The elder son of Ashok Mankad, Mihir was also a tennis player. Ashok Mankad even worked for few years as a commentator and a coach of the Mumbai Ranji team.
