The chief minister of Maharashtra, Ashok Chavan laid the foundation stone of 300-MW power project of Reliance Power on Sunday (February 22). The coal-based power project will come up at Butibori industrial area near Nagpur. According to a statement released to the media, the power project will be commissioned by the second quarter of 2011.

After the completion of the power project, the state of Maharashtra will be able to fulfill the prevailing deficit of around 21 per cent of power. About 200 industries at the MIDC areas of Butibori, Hingna and others will get the power from the new power plant. The power plant will provide cheap and reliable power to different categories of consumers across the state.

Reliance Power is developing the power project under the Group captive Power Projects (GCPP) model. The company in association with local industries in the MIDC region of Nagpur has also launched a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) called Vidarbha Industries Power Limited to construct the first Group Captive Power Project.  With the development of the power project in Butibori industrial area, the industries of the region will reap the benefits of uninterrupted power supply.
