BJP stalwart and current general secretary Arun Jaitely is likely to contest the coming Lok Sabha polls in April-May 2009. However, other BJP leaders like Sushma Swaraj and Venkaiah Naidu will opt out to undertake a nationwide election campaign.

On Thursday (22nd January) party leader Venkaiah Naidu said that, to make Jaitley available to the party to supervise media-related poll work, he may be fielded somewhere in New Delhi. Mr. Naidu also said that, he was asked by party President Rajnath Singh, to stay mostly in Delhi during the election to handle the campaign management work. So Naidu opted out of contesting election, though his supporters had wanted him to contest from Nellore in Andhra Pradesh.

However, when asked by media to comment on this, Jaitley tried to avoid this query. Earlier senior leader of the party, L.K. Advani had asked both Sushma Swaraj and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to campaign extensively for the party.

Meanwhile, The BJP has announced Rajnath Singh and Murli Manohar Joshi as its candidates from Ghaziabad and Varanasi respectively.
