A research team in UK has given hopes to diabetics around the world that they would be able to make artificial pancreas in some years from now. Currently, they are trying to link two current technologies available, first, continuous glucose monitoring, and, second insulin pumps to make something new.
Dr Roman Hovorka of Britain's University of Cambridge, a leading figure in the experiment being carried on, said that he thinks he would be able to make a first-generation artificial pancreas. He utilized devices and components made by Abbott Laboratories and Medtronic, the No 1 maker of insulin pumps and continuous monitors.
Dr Hovorka has been experimenting devices in patients with type-1 diabetes. There are about 24 million diabetic Americans, and out of which 5 percent to 10 percent are Type 1 and they use pumps. On the other hand 23 per cent of Type 1 patients use insulates. And, a total value of these two products is worth 4.3 billion dollars.
