A new study has come up with a good piece of information for those who are suffering from stroke. According to the study, an antibiotic called minocycline can be used for providing a more effective treatment to people who suffer from stroke.

The study, which was conducted by Dr. Cesar V. Borlongan of University of South Florida along with few other researchers, claims that the drug has proved to be safe when it was tested on animal testers.

According to Borlongan, "To date, the thrombolytic agent tPA is the only effective drug for acute ischemic stroke; however, only about 2 percent of ischemic stroke patients benefit from this treatment due to its limited therapeutic window”.

“There is a desperate need to develop additional neuroprotective strategies. This research is an important step in rectifying the treatment issues, presenting a new, more effective treatment for stroke patients”, adds the researchers.

When a person suffers from stroke, the blood is prevented by the clot formed from flowing to other parts in the brain, which can impact the person to a great extent in short as well as long term. According to the study, low doses of intravenous minocycline have a neuroprotective effect on neurons, which reduces the apoptosis of neuronal cells and ameliorating behavioural deficits caused by stroke.

Acccording to Dr. Borlongan, "The safety and therapeutic efficacy of low dose minocycline and its robust neuroprotective effects during acute ischemic stroke make it an appealing drug candidate for stroke therapy.”

The details of the study have been published in open access journal BMC Neuroscience.
