The 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks case moves a step ahead with the Court appointed lawyer, Anjali Waghmare agreeing to defend Pakistani Ajmal Amir Kasab. Earlier, the advocate had refused to represent Kasab, following the attack on her house by a group of Shiv Sena activists. The attacks ended only after she had given a written assurance to the Shiv Sainiks that she would not appear in the Kasab case.
The wife of a police officer, Anjali was distressed by the harassment and claimed that the case was being given a "political color". She was also quoted saying that the commencement of the trial is in the interest of the nation. The Maharashtra government intervened after the attack and arrested nine Shiv Sainiks. Maharashtra Home Minister, Jayant Patil, termed the incident as "unfortunate" and promised to provide the full security to Anjali and her family.
With the safety and security assurance by her side, Anjali approached the court with her readiness to fight Kasab's case. However, the lawyer has asked for a day's time to make her final decision. The Special Public Prosecutor, Ujwal Nikam, also voiced against the activists and said that it was wrong on the part of the Shiv Sainiks to protest against the lawyer. He informed that, according to the Indian legal system, every accused has a right to defend himself.
