Top-seeded Andy Murray advanced into the quarter-finals of Valencia Open on Thursday after defending champion David Ferrer withdrew injured on Thursday.
Andy Murray, making his return from a wrist injury, defeated Leonardo Mayer of Argentina by 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Murray will meet Albert Montanes of Spain on Friday, who was the beneficiary of the withdrawal of eighth-seeded countryman Ferrer.
Ferrer said he hurt his right hamstring during his first-round rematch with compatriot Nicolas Almagro. Ferrer will miss the Paris Masters as he has been advised two weeks rest by the medical team.
Second-seeded Nikolay Davydenko, who is in race to reserve a place in ATP Tour finals in London, defeated Juan Monaco of Argentina by 6-3, 7-5.Fourth seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain, the 2004 Valencia champ had a 6-3, 6-3 straight set win over Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia .
Verdasco will meet seventh-seeded Tommy Robredo in the next round. Tommy had ousted Feliciano Lopez by 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in an all-Spanish match.
Mikhail Youzhny defeated Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay by 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 and will play against fifth-seeded Gilles Simon on Friday.
