A release from Tourism Ministry of India shows that Andhra Pradesh attracted 127 million domestic tourists, which is the highest in all the states. Andhra Pradesh received an increase of 14 per cent from 2006. Evidently, the state of Andhra Pradesh is known for its famous temple the Tirumala Tirupati, which is a popular pilgrim destination for crores of Hindus.
Other states which were on top five in attracting travelers are Uttar Pradesh (116 million), Tamil Nadu (71 million), Karnataka (37.8 million) and Rajasthan (25.9 million). There has not been any change in the list as these were the states which were in top five in the year 2006 too. Interestingly enough, the five states accounted for about 72 per cent of the total domestic tourist visits in 2007.
Delhi fetched 2.01 million foreigner travelers in the year 2007; the number of travelers in the year 2006 in Delhi was 1.9 million. Next to Delhi in terms of foreign tourists are Maharashtra (1.9 million), Tamil Nadu (1.7 million), Uttar Pradesh (1.49 million) and Rajasthan (1.40 million).
