Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) claims to have the world's fastest graphics card, ATI Radeon HD 5970. This was revealed at a recent press conference. This move will prompt a direct competition with the chip maker Nvidia.

ATI Radeon HD 5970 is packed with two fast graphics chips, which will make it the foremost graphics card in the chip market.

AMD senior vice president Rick Bergman said at a financial analyst meeting, "Hemlock" graphics card--now officially called the ATI Radeon HD 5970--is AMD's top-of-the-line graphics product.”

"It's in production. You'll be able to buy it at e-tailers around the world...Five Teraflops out of this baby," Bergman had said in a statement last week.

A teraflop is a trillion floating point operations per second, which is used as a key indicator of graphics performance.

A review site Tom's Hardware has called it the 'fastest discrete (standalone) card in the world.'

The graphics card integrates two graphics processing units for a total of 4.3 billion transistors. It also unites 3,200 stream processing units and 160 texture units in a small place. It supports Microsoft's DirectX 11 to enable fine graphics for the latest Windows 7 OS.

The 5970 chip will have overclocking capabilities, which will allow users to ratchet up chip speeds beyond the card's specified rating.

AMD said in a statement, "The unrivaled overclocking capabilities of the ATI Radeon HD 5970 are enabled by the unique design of the card, which features advanced fan and vapor chamber technologies and a fully vented exhaust to keep the card cool and ensure overclocking headroom using ATI Overdrive technology."

More to it, a maximum resolution of 7680x1600 can be attained in this chip by driving up to three displays at once.

AMD is hopeful that the HD 5970 card will be helpful for the games like Phenomic's BattleForge (Electronic Art), Aliens vs. Predator (Rebellion), The Lord of the Rings Online (Turbine).

The graphics card is likely to be priced at $599.
