Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni has underlined the need for a self-regulatory mechanism in electronic media. This has been cited by Soni in wake of the increasing number of notices which have been issued by I & B ministry for violating the programme code.
.
"The self-regulatory system, to which the broadcasters are also giving importance, should be so effective that the ministry does not have to send notices again and again," Soni said, while addressing the media.

Soni was replying to the question posed by the media for issuing a notice to Colors regarding use of vulgar language in Bigg Boss-3, a reality show where Amitabh Bachchan is the host.

Soni had mentioned last week that about 268 notices have been issued to the TV channels for the violation of programme code and had also underlined the need for self-regulation by the media.

"We have issued about 268 such notices. We don't want to do this, but can't help it. I feel self regulation is possible by the media houses and they are doing it also."

Ruling out censorship or content regulation, Soni had called for setting up an independent mechanism that will balance the freedom of expression and sensitivities of civil society.
