Bollywood hunk Akshay Kumar has now joined the league of Bollywood honorary doctorate personalities like Amitabh Bachchan, Yash Chopra, Shabana Azmi and Shilpa Shetty who have received honorary doctorates from foreign universities in the past. Akshay was recently bestowed with an honorary doctorate degree by the University of Windsor in Canada. The actor was honored in Ontario on May 9, 2008.
Akshay was conferred the honor for his outstanding contribution to the growth of Indian cinema and for his contribution in social work. Akshay after receiving the honorary doctorate remarked that probably an Oscar will also not mean as much as the award means to him. He further added that he attributes his success to the efforts and blessings of his parents and hence the award should have truly been received by his parents.
The 40 year old actor has been involved in many philanthropic works which includes raising money for Trillium Health Care center in Mississauga and Vancouver Children’s Hospital along with plans to open a home for the elderly, especially those who have been neglected by their kin. Akshay also happens to be the Indian Ambassador for Special Olympics.
