The government of India is ready to issue new refund rules after a host of complaints from the travelers. Domestic airlines will no longer be able to hold passengers who cancel their tickets to ransom by asking them to fly again instead within a given time or by delaying funds. The new rules will make it mandatory for the airlines to issue refunds within a week and they cannot swap refund for another flight.
The proposed rules will be a part of the new Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR), framed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and approved by the aviation ministry recently. The CAR has revealed that though the government does not interfere in the commercial practices of the airlines, the volume of complaints necessitated some affirmative action to safeguard the interests of the traveling public.
The CAR has further revealed that airlines will have to make refund payments within seven days in case of payments made by credit cards, while in case of cash transactions, refunds shall be made immediately by the airline office from where the ticket was purchased.
