The two AIDS vaccine that has been developed by two South African researchers will undergo clinical trials along with US experts. This is a major step taken by South Africa because earlier AIDS had been considered as unscientific by the politicians of the country.
Trials for testing human safety of the vaccines will start this month on 36 healthy volunteers. Anthony Mbewu, President of South Africa's government-supported Medical Research Council, said in an interview yesterday.
A trial of 12 volunteers in the United States had been satrted earlier this year. The design for the vaccine was done at the University of Cape Town with technical help from the US National Institutes of Health that also produced the vaccine.
Anthony Fauci, director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease and a leading AIDS researcher, was in South Africa for the launch.
