Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Friday, May 30, 2008 has said that he would not be attending the Beijing Olympics. Ahmadinejad told state television on Friday that he will not attend the Olympics but might attend the para-Olympics. The Iranian head of the state received an official invitation from China in February to attend the Olympic Games.

The refusal by Ahmadinejad is however not owing to any political reason. Iran has hardly taken a stand on China’s mobilization of troops to Tibet and has hardly commented over the dispute between the Dalai Lama and Beijing over Tibet. Iran has not joined the bandwagon of pro-China or pro-Tibet supporters and has largely remained neutral treating it as an internal matter.
