African National Congress (ANC) is expected to form the government in South Africa. With this ANC party's popular but controversial leader, Jacob Zuma is all set to become the president of the country. Early poll results suggest that the ruling ANC has won 60 percent of the votes followed by the main opposition parties Democratic Alliance and Congress of the People (COPE).
The leader of ANC party, Jacob Zuma has couple of corruption charges against him but this does not seem to deter him from gaining the post of president. Corruption charges were dropped against the ANC leader just two weeks ago. During the election campaign in South Africa, Zuma promised to rescue millions of people living in poverty. The task seems increasingly difficult in the face of the global economic slowdown.
Jacob Zuma became the deputy to former president Thabo Mbeki after the first democratic elections in 1994. However, the growing indifferences between the two leaders resulted in sacking of Zuma in 2005. After two years, Jacob Zuma took away the party leadership from Mbeki. Consequently, the ANC party sacked Mbeki .
