The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Kalaingar M. Karunanidhi, told on Tuesday that the 9th World Tamil Conference, which was slated to take place in January 2010, has been put off to June 2010.
The Tamil Nadu chief Minister mentioned that the conference had to be put off as Tamil scholars has demanded for more time for preparing the papers for the convention which will be held in Coimbatore.
Before the announcement, he chaired the meeting of the committee that was formed to work out the modalities of the conference. According to state government official, the conference will now be held in late June or early July.
But this decision by the government has triggered strong response from the AIADMK leader J. Jayalalithaa.
She mentioned that the previous Tamil conferences had been held with the sponsorship of International Association of Tamil Research (IATR). She also has expressed her astonishment regarding the step of Tamil Nadu government to conduct the summit independently.
