The Sri Lankan Defence Ministry on Sunday, June 8, 2008 revealed that at least forty LTTE cadres have been killed in the past 48 hours in fighting along the Forward Defense Lines (FDL). The military Sri Lanka said that the killings of the LTTE cadre were made possible amid raids conducted by the Air Force SLAF on an ‘LTTE gathering point’.
The Air Force on Saturday, claimed to have bombed an ’LTTE leaders gathering place’ located in the Puthukkudiyiruppu area. Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara, Air Force spokesman revealed that the location targeted was an identified ‘command centre’ of the LTTE, located north east of Puthukkudiyiruppu. It was also revealed by the defense ministry sources that military formations broke into LTTE defenses in multi-pronged offensives in Mannar, Welioya and Vavuniya.
The military is yet to assess the damages suffered by the LTTE. In a separate development, the pro-LTTE Tamil National Alliance (TNA), in a statement issued here expressed its ‘deep anguish’ over the killing of civilians in different parts of the country.
