LTTE's suicide attack on Monday (April 20) killed 17 people in the Sri Lanka’s northern war-zone. According to a statement of the defence ministry of Sri Lanka, the brutal incident took place when troops were trying to rescue about 10,000 civilian from the Puthumathalan No Fire Zone (NFZ). The rescue operation was launched last night in spite of stiff LTTE resistance.

The Lankan rebel group executed the suicidal attack in order to prevent the civilian exodus. As per media reports, after the brutal attack thousands of civilians, including children, women and elders are moving out of the war-zone and entering the army-held areas a couple of kilometres away .

According to a government report, about 120,000 people still reside in LTTE- controlled area. More than 68,000 civilians have left the rebel-held areas since the beginning of 2009. The mass exodus from LTTE-held areas seems to make the rebel realize the fact that they are losing the support of the civilians. More than 70,000 people have died in Sri Lanka’s civil war since 1983.
