Recommendations have been put forward by a high level panel for the upgrading of about 1500 colleges which possess rich history as well as strong infrastructure to universities.
The committee which is headed by professor Yashpal called the "Renovation and Rejuvenation of Higher Education", have mentioned that the elimination of affiliation system is very important and colleges which possess good quality must be upgraded as universities.
Professor M AnandaKrishnan, a committee member, told that the panel has found out that the universities are suffering due to the increased number of colleges which are affiliated to them. He told that there are 20, 000 affiliated colleges in India as of now. He also mentioned that the universities are not able to manage the academic content as well as examination properly due to the “overloading’ of colleges. Due to this, those institutions which have good quality are not able to provide the students with more creativity.
The panel has also advocated the elimination of the system of affiliation. Various other suggestions related to the lowering of the universities’ burden has also been given by the panel.
